This actually happens quite frequently because most of our referrals come by the recommendation of our current patients! (And we love this because it helps challenge the longstanding stigma around help-seeking). That being said, the confidentiality of our patients is of the utmost priority. We will maintain both your confidentiality and the confidentiality of anyone you may know or who may know you.
In rare circumstances, it may be determined that there is an ethical conflict in providing care to both parties (for example, if the same psychologist is seeing two spouses who are both residents and whose presenting concern is marital conflict). In these cases, one of the parties would be referred to a different APWI provider, as long as this referral does not betray the other patient's confidentiality.
